Urgency of the Draft Bill on Elimination of Discrimination: Accelerating HIV-AIDS Response in Indonesia

Last July 23, 2024, Salisa (IJRS researcher) had the opportunity to be one of the speakers in a discussion entitled “Urgency of the Draft Bill on the Elimination of Discrimination: Accelerating HIV-AIDS Response in Indonesia” organized by PBHI, Yifos Indonesia, and Inti Muda Indonesia at Sadjoe Cafe and Resto.

In her presentation, Salisa explained the study of IJRS on the proposed anti-discrimination regulation. Based on this study, it was found that the current condition of regulations on the elimination of discrimination in Indonesia is still narrowly regulated and limited to several sectors. For example, discrimination on health grounds such as people with HIV has not been fully protected. Although the Health Law has regulated the prohibition of discrimination in the field of health services, in fact the practice of discrimination against people with HIV occurs outside the health service sector, for example in the education sector, etc.

Currently, civil society groups are also initiating the Elimination of Discrimination Bill, which is expected to annul and suppress the spread of discriminatory local regulations so that it is expected to accelerate the elimination of stigma, discrimination, including HIV-AIDS in Indonesia.

It is important to discuss these issues with civil society, academics, and the Parliament to formulate efforts to eliminate discrimination and accelerate the HIV-AIDS response in Indonesia.
