Grassroots Justice Network–Southeast Asia (GJN-SEA)

From November 13–15, 2025, the Grassroots Justice Network–Southeast Asia (GJN-SEA) gathered in Bangkok for a powerful three-day Carbon Justice Learning Exchange. Bunga (IJRS Researcher) participated in the event as well.

Grassroots justice advocates from the network shared stories from the ground: how carbon projects are unfolding in their areas, what policies shape them, and how communities continue to defend their land, water, and rights.

Dominique Calañas (Namati) led a discussion on GJN’s Six Carbon Justice Principles, grounding the exchange in a shared vision for fairness and accountability in carbon markets:

1. No pay to pollute
2. Respect community rights to land and water
3. Free, prior, and informed consent
4. Fair compensation
5. Fair participation
6. Enforcement

Throughout the exchange, participants strengthened their skills in explaining complex carbon concepts, supporting communities with clear information, and negotiation.

The event closed with a regional action plan that unites local struggles and experiences into a collective push for carbon justice from the ground up.
